What Kind of Damage Do You Have?

Partial Bullseye

The partial bullseye is also termed as a half moon break, it takes on a similar break to the bullseye but does not complete a circle. If the diameter is no larger than 1 inch, or 25 mm it is easily repairable.

General Chip Information

The two most common causes of damage to your auto glass can either be a result of impact or stress on the glass. Impact occurs when an object, such as a stone on the highway, strikes the glass. Twists in the windshield cause stress to the glass. To ensure the damage will be fixed and will not spread farther, your windshield should be either repaired if the damage is small enough or even replaced if necessary.

Windshield repair aims to restore the structural integrity and optical clarity of the glass. It will help prevent the cracks from spreading without removing or replacing the glass. Make sure the parts used are OEM or Original Equipment Manufacturer certified to ensure that the materials used in repair are the actual parts manufactured specifically for your vehicle.

Windshield repairs usually do not exceed 30 minutes. Replacements or windshield installation takes about an hour or less. However, it is highly recommended for the vehicle to be left alone for at least 2 hours after to ensure that the urethane adhesive has dried.

Once you have discovered the damage on your windshield, it is wise to get it repaired immediately. Otherwise, moisture, visible grime or dirt could become trapped in the damaged area, so that once you do get it repaired, the results would not be as desired as if it had not been immediately repaired. In general, if the damage does not exceed 5mm, it should be able to be repaired. Lines radiating out from the break which do not go over 50 mm or the limits of the windshield should mostly be repairable. However, if the inside screen is not intact, the entire windshield must be replaced.

The repair procedure first includes putting protective drapes around the windshield to prevent potential damage to the body of the vehicle. Next, the crack or chip is cleaned of moisture and debris and a high-pressure injector is used to fill and seal the broken area with resin. Mylar, a thin polyester film is then placed over the still-liquid resin to secure its position. Then a powerful UV light is directed at the area to harden the resin. Afterward, once the Mylar is taken off, the residual resin cleaned off and the glass polished, the windshield repair is completed. Most insurance companies will cover your windshield repairs.

Prices for windshield repair will vary and the quality of the repair will depend on the skills and knowledge of your technician, the quality of resin, and the extent of the damage and type of break on your windshield. There are five common different types of chips including the bullseye, partial bullseye, combination, flower, and star.

Windshield installation quality depends on the quality of glass, molding, urethane, temperature and humidity, the existing windshield frame, and the ability of the installer. Your new windshield should match your old windshield’s tint, size, and thickness. The molding should be a rubber seal. Urethane is what bonds the glass to your vehicle and you must ensure that it has dried, or cured, to prevent any potential disaster where the windshield may pop or buckle out of place. The time for the urethane to dry also depends on the temperature and humidity of the day. The existing windshield frame should not be curved or bowed or twisted or damaged with rust. Otherwise, you face the dangerous possibility of your windshield not being able to bond with the frame. Even if the materials used to install a windshield are of the utmost quality, you still must take time and money to guarantee that your installer has the skill, experience, and education to install auto glass.
