How Do I Deal with my Insurance Company?

A 'No-Fault' Claim

Do not hesitate to call your insurance company for an insurance claim on your auto glass replacement.

In most cases, your rate and premiums will not go up since repairable cracks and chips on your car window glass are considered “no-fault” claims under the comprehensive portion of your insurance.

However, whether or not it can be a no-fault claim depends on the particular circumstance which caused the damage, the insurance company, and auto insurance policy you have.

Make sure that you do not confuse your comprehensive deductible with your collision deductible.

If your windshield needs to be replaced you will most likely be unable to file a no-fault claim.

If you are uncertain how to pursue this claim, you can even let your windshield installer speak to your insurance company for you by providing him with your policy number.

The auto glass replacement company can complete your billing and paperwork to free up your time.

Insurance Deductible

Check with your insurance company first, but usually the comprehensive auto insurance policy for your vehicle should cover auto glass.

Depending on your policy, your insurance company may waive your deductible. If they do not waive it, you will have to pay the deductible and your insurance will cover the remainder of the bill.

For example, if your windshield repair will cost $300 and your comprehensive deductible is $50, you will only be responsible for paying that $50, as your insurance will cover the remaining $250.

On the other hand, if your deductible is $300, you will end up paying the entire bill of $300.

If you reside in Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, or South Carolina, you are in a Zero Deductible State which by law obliges your insurance to replace your windshield with no deductible given that you had already signed up for a comprehensive insurance policy for your vehicle.

Selecting a Shop

Many insurance companies will recommend a glass shop to you if you have not already selected one by yourself.

It is in your best interest to seek a glass shop on your own if you wish to retain the power to choose which one to go to.

The majority of insurance companies have made previous agreements with large glass manufacturing companies such as Safelite Glass Network or Lynx Services.

When choosing your glass shop you should make sure it offers a lifetime warranty, installs glass from an original equipment manufacturer with certified technicians and uses Dow Automotive urethane, the most common and reliable brand used on vehicles in the US.
